Power Out Preps
Since we’re farmers and always keep an eye on the weather we usually have some warning that we might lose power. Sometimes, not always. No power means no water. No water means no toilet flushing, water trough filling, laundry, dishwashing, showering. Anything that requires water is a no go.
I have a list of things I do when no power is a possibility. If I have a day or two of warning I make sure laundry is caught up. If it’s a few hours then I get the dishes washed, I didn’t have this done one time and dirty dishes sat on the counter and mocked me for days; dirty dishes can be surprisingly cruel. Empty cat litter jugs are filled with water for toilet flushing. I fill the tea kettle, plan meals around using the grill and put a water pitcher or two in the fridge. Cell phones and laptops are charged, do we have enough books to read when there is no TV? Batteries or candles to read by?
In the barn the doors are shut and locked tight against high winds, water troughs are filled, extra buckets go under the drippy eavestrough to fill with rain water. Are the animals where we want them to be? Moving them before a Biblical flood of rain starts is always a better idea than waiting.
Today’s preps will also include fastening a tarp over the shop roof. It’s developed leaks in multiple places, we think it might be coming in through the roof vent so it’s more a design flaw than a material failure but it’s still leaking and it needs to be covered before the predicted 70 m.p.h straight line winds get rolling.
Anything in the yard that could blow away will be picked up and stowed safely. Tom got some lawn mowing done yesterday but I haven’t worked in the garden all week, about the time the soil dries out enough it rains again. Next week I’ll have to ignore the predicted rain every day and just go plant stuff.
AIP Turkey Pot Pie
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic
1 stalk celery
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon parsley
1 teaspoon salt
4 Tablespoons coconut oil, divided
5 Tablespoons cassava flour
3/4 cup bone broth
2 cups diced turkey
3 cups vegetables – I used broccoli, carrots and cauli, but you can use what ever sounds good: peas, corn, green beans…
3/4 cup coconut flour
1 cup tapioca flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons gelatin
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/4 – 1/2 cup water
Heat 1T coconut oil in frying pan and saute onion and celery until tender. Add garlic, herbs and salt and saute an additional minute.
Melt in remaining oil and slowly sprinkle in flour, stirring as you go. Continue stirring while adding milk. Add in bone broth and mix. Add turkey and vegetables and mix until well coated.
Pour into 13×9 baking dish and level.
For biscuit topping: mix dry ingredients together. Add in oil, milk and water and mix into a soft dough.
Form biscuit shape and place on top of filling.
Bake 375F 20-25 minutes until biscuits are golden brown and pot pie is bubbling.
